As forest areas decrease, water storage becomes compromised and results in local changes in climate. Research shows that forests function in a hydrological cycle, and when they burn, evaporation and transpiration rates decrease, increasing the risk of drought in the surrounding area. From a sustainability perspective, forest fires damage diverse and biodiversity-rich ecosystems. Various species of flora and fauna are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss. For example, in forest fires in Kalimantan, thousands of endemic species lost their homes, disrupting the balance of an already fragile ecosystem. This also affects food security, because many cultivated plant species are very dependent on the existence of forests. Furthermore, forest fires contribute to air pollution. The smoke produced contains harmful particles and chemicals, which can cause serious health problems such as respiratory problems, heart disease and cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), poor air quality due to forest fires can trigger an increase in cases of respiratory infections, especially in children and the elderly. Mitigation methods are needed to overcome forest fires. One strategy is sustainable land management, which includes reforestation and protection of existing forests. Governments and environmental organizations also need to increase public awareness about the importance of forests and the impact of fires. Technological innovations, such as the use of drones for monitoring and early detection of forest fires, can also help minimize damage. In addition, stricter policies against burning land for agriculture are essential to reduce the number of fires. In a global context, international cooperation is key in overcoming the problem of forest fires. Countries must come together to share knowledge, resources and technology to develop effective strategies to prevent forest fires and preserve the environment for future generations.
