Suspect is a word used to describe a person who, on the basis of facts or circumstances, is thought to have committed a punishable act. The term is derived from the Latin word suspirata, meaning to suspect or think. Before the suspect is officially charged he or she remains a suspect, however once prosecution has started the suspect is called the accused.
In many cases, the police must have actual indications to make someone a suspect; otherwise it would be difficult for the authorities to investigate. The suspect may then be interrogated and questioned by the police. During the questioning the suspect must be read his or her Miranda Rights.
If you ever witness a crime or suspicious activity please call the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center. We literally handle thousands of calls each year and your information could be the key in solving a case. Often times a 911 dispatcher will ask you to describe the suspect(s) you observed. If possible, try to notice all physical identifiers you can. Pay attention to race, sex, approximate age and height and weight. Also take note of facial information such as hair color, complexion and any distinctive features like scars or tattoos. Lastly, try to note what the suspect was wearing, start with outer clothing and work your way in.
